Oliver Fung

Oliver was born in Toronto, Ontario and grew up in its suburb. He is a medical student (class of 2022) at the University of Ottawa. Prior to attending the University of Ottawa, he studied Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Throughout his undergraduate studies, Oliver was actively involved in the school and community. He was an active member of the McGill Ski and Snowboard Club and active volunteer with the student initiative, the ICU Bridge Program, with the Montreal General Hospital. Outside of McGill, Oliver gave back to the community through mentoring graduating Indigenous high school students, and volunteering at the local homeless shelter. Oliver also has a special interest in cancer research where he was involved in many projects including research analyzing methylation biomarkers for the progression of cervical cancer, analyzing hospital procedures for cancer therapy-induced colitis, developing a novel music therapy program for adolescent cancer patients, and research in the drug mechanisms of chemotherapy on ovarian cancer cells.

Within medicine, Oliver is interested in addressing social determinants of health and is an active member of the faculty’s Social Accountability Student Advisory Committee. As a result, he is working towards a concentration in Global Health in addition to his MD. In his free time, Oliver enjoys travelling, skiing, curling, painting and reading.
